Johan started his legal career in 2005 in Tauranga before returning to Hamilton to work at a local law firm. In early 2009, Johan left that firm to commence practice as a Barrister sole before joining forces with Kay Hoult in partnership with a vision to create a law firm that thrives on excellence and provides a friendly work environment.
Johan's practice covers a wide variety of work, but primarily involves all aspects of family law and other forms of litigation. He regularly appears in the Family Court, District Court and High Court. Johan has also conducted cases in the Maori Land Court, Employment Relations Authority and Court of Appeal. He also receives appointments from the Family Court to represent children in family disputes and has been appointed in both the Family Court and the High Court as counsel to assist the court and as counsel for subject person in various proceedings.
Johan is heavily involved in theatre and serves on a number of Theatre Society committees and boards. He is fluent in Afrikaans and maintains close links with the South African community both on a professional and personal level. In addition, Johan enjoys spending time with his partner, family and friends - usually over a nice meal and glass of wine.
Kay studied for her Law Degree at Waikato University, graduating with First Class Honours. Prior to commencing practice with Johan Niemand in 2009, Kay was a partner at a law firm in Hamilton. Over the years Kay has specialised in general litigation with a particular focus on relationship property and trust matters. Kay is a qualified mediator and frequently leads Family Dispute Resolution Mediations. She also has experience in the Coroner's Court. The Family Court appoints Kay to act for children in family disputes. In 2011, Kay received the Family Law Award at the annual New Zealand Law Awards. In 2012, Kay received the New Zealand Litigation and Dispute Resolution Award. Kay is a Council member of Age Concern Hamilton.
When Kay is not at work, she cherishes time with her family and walking the dog. In the winter she can often be found on the mountain, skiing.
Fiona was admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor of New Zealand in July 2008. She was also admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Western Australia where she practised family law.
Fiona specialises in Family Law including parenting orders, protection orders, guardianship issues such as relocation and relationship property. Fiona is appointed by the Family Court to act for children in family disputes. Fiona heads the Free Legal Advice Service at the Western Community Centre and has a passion for providing legal assistance in the community when she can.
Outside of work her interests are socialising with friends, family and travel.
David began working for Niemand Peebles Hoult as a Summer Clerk in November 2012. At the end of 2014 he completed his Law Degree with First Class Honours and was admitted to the Bar in August 2015. David is now employed as a Staff Solicitor. He also completed his Social Science Degree majoring in Political Science. In 2013 David was a finalist at the Buddle Findlay Regional Negotiation Competition and in 2014 was a semi-finalist at the Minter Ellison Regional Mooting Competition. David has also represented Waikato University internationally at the Shine Law Mooting competition in Australia.
Outside of work David enjoys road cycling, running and other various fitness activities.
Sarah began working at Niemand Peebles Hoult at the beginning of 2017 and was admitted to the Bar in August 2017. She completed her Law Degree with First Class Honours in 2016, along with a Communications Degree majoring in Public Relations. While at University Sarah was part of the Debating Society, Law Students' Association and studied for a semester at the University of Ottawa, Canada. She was a finalist in Client Interviewing and Mooting competitions and represented the University of Waikato internationally for Mooting.
Outside of work, Sarah enjoying spending time with family and friends, reading and playing underwater hockey.
Rae is the Practice Manager and Trust Account Administrator. She has many years of experience in customer service and Human Resource management. Rae is a vital part of our management team and her skills are ideally suited to her Trust Account administration responsibilities.
Rae says that the people at NPL are a dedicated, professional team who work hard, but they also have lots of fun. Outside of work, Rae's interests are photography, fashion, sewing and spending time with her family.
Trish has over 25 years experience working in various roles in legal firms in Whangarei and Hamilton. She has also worked as sole Office Person for a commercial real estate firm in Hamilton for about 5 years and sat and passed her real estate licence certification. Trish carries out the firm's residential conveyancing and she is a dedicated professional working tirelessly to assist our clients through the buying and selling process.
Trish enjoys DIY, gardening, hand crafts (even has her own soap business, AND a skin and wellness business). She has competed in sports such as hockey, basketball, rugby league and soccer and has competed overseas in waka ama. In her spare time, Trish enjoys listening to music, reading, travelling, and helping people. She also loves spending time with her husband and family.
Leanne joined the Niemand Peebles Hoult team in July 2013 initially working as PA for Johan Niemand and Shaun Cousins. After leaving in 2017 and moving north, Leanne returned to the firm in 2018 and is now Kay Hoult's PA. Leanne has extensive experience in the legal field working for various major law firms in Auckland, she also owned her own property management company for a number of years before deciding to make the Waikato her home. Leanne thrives on the busy daily schedule and is very happy to be back working with the awesome team at Niemand Peebles Hoult.
Leanne's outside interests are her beloved three horses, learning natural horsemanship, renovating and upgrading her lifestyle property and in between she spends time with her children and three grandchildren - oh and Ruby her beautiful Burnese Mountain Dog.
Jessica joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in November 2018. She graduated from the University of Waikato in 2016, completing her Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies. She then decided to further her studies by completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science at Wintec, and graduated in March 2018.
Outside of work Jessica enjoys going to the gym and spending time with her family.
Stacey joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in February 2019. Previously Stacey was a Court Taker in the Family Court, she liked the interactions she had with the Lawyers from this firm and that's what sparked her interest in getting a position at Niemand Peebles Hoult.
Stacey's interests outside of work include spending time with her partner and their 4 children, going on bike rides and some retail therapy never goes amiss!
Ange joined the team at Niemand Peebles Hoult in 2018. Ange is our receptionist and is the friendly face you see when you come into our office.
Ange's interests outside of work include family, playing tennis and going to the gym. She also enjoys movies and travel.
LLB (Hons)/Law Clerk
Emma joined the team at Niemand Peebles Hoult in March 2017. Emma completed her Bachelor of Laws with first class Honours at Waikato University in 2018 and will be admitted as a solicitor in July 2019. She has a keen interest in family law and assists our solicitors with various matters.
While at University, Emma competed both nationally and internationally in the Russell McVeagh Client interviewing competition and won the Norris Ward McKinnon Family Law Mooting competition.
While not at work, Emma can generally be found in a shoe store or enjoying time with family and friends.
Ben joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in January 2019. He is currently in his fourth year of his Bachelor of Laws with Honours. In 2018, Ben
represented Waikato University both nationally and internationally in Mooting
competitions. He also placed first in the Norris Ward McKinnon First Year Moot, the Bell Gully Junior Moot, and the Bell Gully Senior Moot.
Outside of work, Ben plays hockey and his other interests include, MMA, travel, running and reading.
Summer comes into the office every day with Kay. The clients adore her and she keeps everybody entertained.
