Johan started his legal career in 2005 in Tauranga before returning to Hamilton to work at a local law firm. In early 2009, Johan left that firm to commence practice as a Barrister sole before joining forces with Kay Hoult in partnership with a vision to create a law firm that thrives on excellence and provides a friendly work environment.
Johan's practice covers a wide variety of work, but primarily involves all aspects of family law and other forms of litigation. He regularly appears in the Family Court, District Court and High Court. Johan has also conducted cases in the Maori Land Court, Employment Relations Authority and Court of Appeal. He also receives appointments from the Family Court to represent children in family disputes and has been appointed in both the Family Court and the High Court as counsel to assist the court.
Johan is heavily involved in theatre and serves on a number of Theatre Society committees and boards. He is fluent in Afrikaans and maintains close links with the South African community both on a professional and personal level. In addition, Johan enjoys spending time with his partner, family and friends - usually over a nice meal and glass of wine.
Kay studied for her Law Degree at Waikato University, graduating with First Class Honours. Prior to commencing practice with Johan Niemand in 2009, Kay was a partner at a law firm in Hamilton. Over the years Kay has specialised in general litigation with a particular focus on relationship property and trust matters. Kay is a qualified mediator and frequently leads Family Dispute Resolution Mediations. She also has experience in the Coroner's Court. The Family Court appoints Kay to act for children in family disputes. In 2011, Kay received the Family Law Award at the annual New Zealand Law Awards. In 2012, Kay received the New Zealand Litigation and Dispute Resolution Award. Kay is a Council member of Age Concern Hamilton.
When Kay is not at work, she cherishes time with her family and walking the dog. In the winter she can often be found on the mountain, skiing.
Fiona was admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor of New Zealand in July 2008. She was also admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Western Australia where she practised family law.
Fiona specialises in Family Law including parenting orders, protection orders, guardianship issues such as relocation and relationship property. Fiona heads the Free Legal Advice Service at the Western Community Centre and has a passion for providing legal assistance in the community when she can.
Outside of work her interests are socialising with friends, family and travel.
Shaun graduated from Waikato University in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History. He was admitted to the Bar in October 2011. Shaun joined the firm in October 2011 and currently practises in the areas of Relationship Property, Parenting and Domestic Violence, Estates and Wills, Bankruptcy proceedings, Civil Litigation and Tenancy and Property Disputes.
Outside of work Shaun plays football and his other interests include travel, film, reading and fishing.
David began working for Niemand Peebles Hoult as a Summer Clerk in November 2012. At the end of 2014 he completed his Law Degree with First Class Honours and was admitted to the Bar in August 2015. David is now employed as a Staff Solicitor. He also completed his Social Science Degree majoring in Political Science. In 2013 David was a finalist at the Buddle Findlay Regional Negotiation Competition and in 2014 was a semi-finalist at the Minter Ellison Regional Mooting Competition. David has also represented Waikato University internationally at the Shine Law Mooting competition in Australia.
Outside of work David enjoys road cycling, running and other various fitness activities.
Sarah began working at Niemand Peebles Hoult at the beginning of 2017 and was admitted to the Bar in August 2017. She completed her Law Degree with First Class Honours in 2016, along with a Communications Degree majoring in Public Relations. While at University Sarah was part of the Debating Society, Law Student Association and studied for a semester at the University of Ottawa, Canada. She was a finalist in Client Interviewing and Mooting competitions and represented the University of Waikato internationally for Mooting.
Outside of work Sarah enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading and playing underwater hockey.
Rae is the Practice Manager and Trust Account Administrator. She has many years of experience in customer service and Human Resource management. Rae is a vital part of our management team and her skills are ideally suited to her Trust Account administration responsibilities.
Rae says that the people at NPL are a dedicated, professional team who work hard, but they also have lots of fun. Outside of work, Rae's interests are photography, fashion, sewing and spending time with her family.
Fiona is a qualified Legal Executive who was trained in the UK. Fiona joined Niemand Peebles Hoult to carry out the firm's residential conveyancing and she is a dedicated professional working tirelessly to assist our clients through the buying and selling process.
In her spare time Fiona loves going to the movies, reading and riding pillion on her husband's motorbikes.
Karla joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in July 2015. Karla brings with her extensive experience in customer service and is now applying these skills in her position as Legal Secretary and has an immense interest in law. Originally from Australia, she moved to New Zealand in 2014 and has found her second home in Hamilton.
In her spare time, Karla enjoys spending time with her partner, watching movies and reading.
Trish has over 25 years experience working in various roles in legal firms in Whangarei and Hamilton. She has also worked as sole Office Person for a commercial real estate firm in Hamilton for about 5 years and sat and passed her real estate licence certification.
Trish enjoys DIY, gardening, hand crafts (even has her own soap business, AND a skin and wellness business). She has competed in sports such as hockey, basketball, rugby league and soccer and has competed overseas in waka ama. In her spare time, Trish enjoys listening to music, reading, travelling, and helping people. She also loves spending time with her husband and family.
Holly joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in October 2017. She completed her Bachelor of Management Studies, majoring in Human Resource Management and Strategy at the University of Waikato in June 2016. After she completed her degree, she moved to America for a year to work and travel. She returned to New Zealand in August 2017 and she pursued her interest in law by obtaining a position as Legal Secretary at Niemand Peebles Hoult.
Outside of work, Holly's interests include playing with her dog, travelling and watching movies.
Originally from the UK, Liz joined the team at Niemand Peebles Hoult in 2011. Liz is our Receptionist and is the friendly face you see when you come to our office.
Liz's interest outside work include family, her lovely cats and her dog. She also enjoys movies and travel.
Emma joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in March 2017. She is currently in her third year of her Bachelor of Law with Honours. In 2016 and 2017, Emma represented Waikato University both nationally and internationally in Client Interviewing. She has also placed first in the Norris Ward McKinnon First Year Moot and in the Buddle Findlay Junior Moot. Emma is involved in both University of Waikato Law Students' Association and the Mooting Society.
When not at work or university, Emma can generally be found in a shoe store or relaxing with friends or family.
Summer comes into the office every day with Kay. The clients adore her and she keeps everybody entertained.
